Global Warming Expedition Stopped by too Much Cold and Ice - Major Winter Changes Coming

Letter: Major Winter Changes Coming

This is in response to several recent articles in the Portland Press Herald concerning the warmest year on record - and a Biddeford Maine businessman setting sail for the Arctic Ocean as part of the Polar Ocean Challenge expedition during July into August. The group wanted to draw attention to the melting Arctic ice caused by human induced global warming. They expected to travel the North East passage near Russia, an area of sea that has been previously frozen all year but during the warm 2015 El Nino summer was mainly ice free.

Here is a hard look at the accuracy of the articles dramatically headlined by the Press Herald.

Following the warm 2010 El Nino that caused Arctic melting, the Arctic became very cold during the years from 2012 into 2014 and Maine saw a couple brutal winters. With the ending of the 2015 El Nino - the Arctic has again begun cooling rapidly with restoration of ice.

So it was no surprise to see that as of the end of July - the Polar Ocean Challenge expedition was blocked from completing their intended route to the Arctic due to cold temperatures and too much ice. This also occurred when they tried this a few years ago following the 2010 El Nino. Thus the Arctic is not ice free as Gore stated it be by 2015.

So what is happening? The Arctic began turning colder 3 years ago with remarkable ice restoration – although this process was temporarily disrupted with the 2015 El Nino. During May and June the second greatest Global cooling in 37 years was recorded in the earth’s atmosphere near the Jetstream. Earth has now entered a 130 year global cooling pattern and it is back to old fashioned Maine winters.
